FAQs
I thought medical transcription was a dying art. Please advise.
TranscribeAnywhere.com has nothing to do with medical transcription whatsoever. General transcription is quite a bit different and you don't work with doctors. Please see the post General Transcription vs. Medical Transcription for more.
Won't technology and AI take over the need for transcriptionists?
No, it can't and won't. In fact, AI can be used as a tool to help transcriptionists be more productive and work less while earning more. Some of our grads are doubling their income! And we teach you how to use it to improve your workflow.
Can anyone do this?
No. You need to have patience and the ability to sit for long periods of time. An eye for detail is also necessary.
If English isn't your first language, our courses may not be the right fit for you. I'm often criticized for saying this, but it's beyond the scope of our transcription training to teach ESL students. I don't say this to insult or demean anyone because I firmly believe that anyone can do anything that they commit to accomplishing. However, ask any of our students and they'll tell you that English grammar and punctuation are the most challenging aspects of our training. It'll be even more difficult for those who aren't native English speakers.

I'm scared I won't find any clients. Do you help me find work?
Yes! First, you have to realize your confidence will improve a thousand fold once you know what you're doing. That's where Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 come in -- you've got to learn the theory and practice before you can market and get clients. Imagine trying to find clients for your cake-baking company ... without having any idea how to bake cakes! On the other hand, if you learn and train to become a master baker, your confidence will flourish.
We are not a job placement agency, but we do provide you all the tools and resources necessary to find work as a transcriptionist. As part of your course fee, you receive step-by-step tutorials (including videos) on how to find clients (even on YouTube!), how to apply for transcription company jobs (which are a lower-paying option but still good experience), and how to build a website to market yourself.
If you've taken a look at our post series People Who Use Transcriptionists, you'll quickly see there's a ton of work out there for transcriptionists -- let us transform you into the transcriptionist you need to be in order to get clients like these.
What is the difference between legal transcription and general transcription?
General transcription is the practice of transcribing from audio and video files for all different types of industries, such as academia, marketing, interviews, films, among others. Legal transcription requires all of the skills necessary as a general transcriptionist with the added knowledge of legal terminology and documentation.
Will I get rich?
No, but you will reap the rewards of freedom found by working from home and performing challenging work.
Of course, your earnings are entirely dependent on your goals and ambition. Some go big and start their own transcription businesses, where the earnings can increase substantially. Others choose to work it as a side gig for a little extra income.
I'm skeptical -- is there really a demand for transcription?
YES! With the exploding popularity of video all over the internet, there is a rapidly increasing demand for transcription. Much of that video needs to be turned into a written document to be used for marketing, training, blog or website content, eBooks… the list is endless.
Companies and marketers of all kinds use transcriptionists. Some are big production companies and others are small mom-and-pop businesses. The demand for qualified transcriptionists will continue to rise.
See this expanded FAQ for more, and be sure to check out our post category People Who Use Transcriptionists for examples and evidence that transcription is in high demand by a diverse range of markets.
How long do I have access to the course? Are updates included?
You have access forever, and all updates are included at no additional cost. The course is entirely self-paced, too, so no one will rush you through, nor will you be penalized for not completing it in a certain time frame.
Will I have support as a student?
Yes! Our instructor-led support is one of the most helpful you'll ever experience.
In addition, you'll have the support of your fellow students and grads in our private community groups.
Where can legal transcriptionists find work?
Legal transcriptionists can find work in law firms, legal support agencies, government agencies, and legal departments for corporations.
I Can Type... Can't You Just Tell Me How to Get Clients?
No.
Producing quality transcription work is about so much more than typing.
We reserve the step-by-step how-to info for our students who choose to wisely invest time in a safe training ground first -- so they can be sure to offer the highest standard to their clients: extensive know-how, speed, accuracy, and flow to their transcripts.
They're spending time to get better and faster at transcription so they can earn even more per hour as they improve.
They're focusing intensely on punctuation so their transcripts flow better and are more useful to their clients and their audiences.
They're not skipping the details like time coding, shortcut keys, and formatting just to make a quick buck.
If you're looking for a post on exactly how to secure higher-paying clients, you aren't going to find one out in the open. That's not us being mean; we just believe in achieving excellence first before chasing the paycheck. What good would it do to make public our awesome tutorials on how to find work as a general transcriptionist if you don't know how to do the work properly?
Here's what would happen: tons of people who only care about making easy money -- and not their work quality -- would abuse the information without bothering to know what they're doing first!
Skipping steps and forgoing training is foolish. I've been in this business a long time and I've seen it happen time and time again. People are in too big of a hurry to make easy money. Someone told them you don't need any experience or training to become a transcriptionist, and that's just not true -- at least if you want to do well.
So invest in yourself now so you don't lose clients and ruin your reputation before you even get going. Wouldn't it be better to spend a few months building your skills first so you can really impress your first client instead of rushing into something you're not ready for and making a bad impression?
Yes, it would.
Do I have to do the practice material?
Yes. Without practice, you really don’t stand a chance of succeeding. We provide 60+ audio and video practice dictation files. You must complete all of them and pass the final exam to receive a certificate from us.
Likewise, you cannot proceed to the next level (Business Building and Website Template) before passing the final exam and receiving certification.
Can't I just buy a certificate?
No. We are not a certificate mill just here to make a buck. We care about our students and the industry as a whole. If you are not willing to put in the work, please don’t enroll.
What topics are included in the course?
Our courses include information about the transcription industry in general, the legal industry, software and equipment, English grammar and punctuation, typing drills, real-world practice dictations, formatting and working with templates, marketing training, and information to help you start your own online transcription business.
Click on the "Courses" tab to view the course syllabi for each of our courses.
Can an absolute beginner learn transcription?
Yes. We start with typing drills and move on from there. The course is self-paced so it is ideal for newbies and semi-skilled transcriptionists alike.

How long will the course take to complete?
Both our general and legal transcription courses should take at least two to four months to complete depending on your current skill level.
Is the course accredited?
At the present time, there is no national accreditation for general transcriptionists. We do, however, offer our own certification which is highly regarded in the industry.
Transcribe Anywhere is an approved school by the American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT), an organization that offers the Certified Electronic Transcriber (CET) examination and certification for legal transcriptionists.
How much can I make as a transcriptionist?
The average median annual income for a general transcriptionist is currently $58,000. Legal transcriptionists can earn around $65,000.
There's variance because we work for ourselves and decide our own work schedules. Some work part-time and some work full-time.
Of course, if you start your own business and hire subcontractors while working as a project manager yourself, your income can grow well beyond these figures.
Does the course provide a certificate?
Yes. All students who complete our courses and pass our final exams will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.
Do you offer a money-back guarantee? Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
Education isn't a tangible product that can be returned. No educational institution offers money-back guarantees. What we offer is quality transcription education, real skills that you'll be able to use to secure work, at a very affordable price. We also offer a free mini-course to help you decide whether or not transcription is the right choice for you BEFORE investing any money. The payment options we offer also give you the opportunity to enroll at a very low cost and experience the basics of transcribing without shelling out a lot of money.
We offer you all of the tools and resources you'll need to succeed, but there are no guarantees because what you do with the training is up to you. So, no, we cannot offer refunds or guarantee your success.
