Why AI is Failing

When we see ChatGPT and the like on the news, we tend to get some serious existential anxiety about our own careers.

What if we get replaced by AI? we wonder.

Sadly, some people really have seen themselves being replaced by things like ChatGPT.

Artists who’ve toiled and trained for their craft have been replaced, too.

And it seems like everyone’s saying these tools are only getting better and better, and will take over the world one day. 

But an interesting thing I found says different.

Basically, AI art used to really look legitimately good enough to replace artists.

But instead of getting better, it’s gotten worse!  

The tools have gotten tougher to even use, and more of the art that comes from them gives serious uncanny valley vibes.

And DALL-E isn’t the only one suffering from quality decline here.

A team from Stanford and UC Berkeley came out with a research study where they asked ChatGPT to do things like solve math problems, answer sensitive questions, and generate programming code.

It did NOT go well.

ChatGPT is getting worse, not better.

And the thing is, these tools can only blindly regurgitate images or text that others have made. 

The tools don’t know how to improve what they put out.

But we humans DO.

Human writers and human artists care about their craft.

They love searching for new ways to expand and improve on their skills, styles, and techniques. 

That consistent, passionate practice of their craft only ensures their work gets better and better.

And that’s something we should all champion: constant improvement in the arts and everywhere!

So we humans can do so much better than ChatGPT, DALL-E and others could ever do.

Sure, some clients will go the “easy” route of using these tools. 

But the ones who recognize and appreciate human talent are out there, still - and they’re worth their weight in gold.
